We are looking for a System Engineer for Data Science to work at ESAC’s premises in Madrid, Spain.

In this role, you’ll be at the heart of ESA Datalabs, a state-of-the-art, cloud-based platform that gives scientists seamless access to ESA’s vast space science archives. About the client and location The European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) is the European Space Agency’s (ESA) base in Villanueva de la Canada, Madrid, Spain. ESAC is responsible for all of ESA’s research into astronomy and solar system exploration, as well as being the location of ESA’s space telescope. It is from here that archives are stored on ESA’s science missions, which are then made accessible for researchers all around the world.

Tasks and activities The scope of work will include :

Providing technical troubleshooting and administrative support for tools, such as Rancher, Kubernetes, Harness, Bitbucket, Nexus, Jira, Confluence, Zabbix, Splunk, SonarQube or WordPress.

Ensuring smooth deployments, maintaining and evolving CI / CD tool-stak, defining and developing tests, validating new features / bug fixes.

Coordinating software releases under Agile, enforcing change procedures, and supporting Jira / Confluence for issues, requirements, and project info.

Contributing to internal development by coding and maintaining tools and services using Python, TypeScript, GraphQL, PostgreSQL, OpenLDAP, Redis or Elasticsearch.

Monitoring notifications (Jira, email, Teams, Zabbix, Splunk, Grafana), tracking tickets, and providing real-time technical support.

Working with ESA IT teams to resolve infrastructure issues and supporting system integrations and with other projects / missions consuming EDL service.

Participating in Scrum, Sprint Review / Planning, Progress, and User Group meetings, and contribute to workshops or publications.

Skills and experience The following skills and experience are mandatory :

University Degree in Computer Science or related field.

At least 3-5 years in System Engineering / DevOps with CI / CD & Containerization Expertise.

Strong knowledge of Kubernetes, Rancher, Git, Harness, and Nexus.

Experience with monitoring (Zabbix, Splunk), VPN / LDAP, Jira, Confluence, and Jira Service Management.

Hands-on coding experience with Python, TypeScript, GraphQL, PostgreSQL, OpenLDAP, Redis, and Elasticsearch.

Background in Agile release / change management, validation / testing, and technical documentation (including CIDL).

Proven ability in user support, troubleshooting, real-time monitoring, and cross-team communication.

Comfortable working in Agile / Scrum environments, both independently and in multicultural teams.

Desire to work both autonomously and as part of a team, in an international multicultural environment.

Solution oriented mindset, with a customer focused communication skill.

Fluent in English, both written and spoken.

The following skills and experience would be highly desirable :

Familiarity with ESA systems (Cosmos, ESA Datalabs, GSSC).

WordPress and Microsoft Teams / Cosmos CAS Tools.

Knowledge of DevSecOps and / or ML / data science platforms.

Contributions to workshops, conferences, or publications.
