About the Role – Senior Data Architect

As a Senior Data Architect on our Global Data & Advanced Analytics team, you will be the visionary and designer of our data ecosystem. You’ll leverage your expertise in AWS cloud-native technologies and big data platforms to build scalable data solutions that empower advanced analytics and AI-driven products. This is a senior role for a hands-on leader who can both strategize at the enterprise level and dive into technical design. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure our data architecture is robust, secure, and aligned with business needs, enabling Alight’s mission to provide insightful, real-time solutions in health, wealth, and human capital.

  • Responsibilities : Design and Strategy : Define data architecture blueprint for products, including data flow diagrams, system integrations, and storage solutions. Refine architecture to meet evolving business requirements and to incorporate new AWS capabilities and industry best practices. Drive adoption of and adherence to architecture and standards.
  • Cloud Data Platform Development : Lead the development of our cloud-based data platform on AWS. Implement data pipelines and warehouses using AWS services (Glue for ETL, Lambda for serverless processing, Redshift for data warehousing, S3 for data storage). Ensure data is extracted, transformed, and loaded to support AI, automation, and analytics & reporting needs.
  • Big Data & Legacy Integration : Oversee ingestion of large-scale datasets from various sources (transactional systems, APIs, external files). Optimize processing with Spark and integrate legacy Hadoop-based data into the AWS environment.
  • Data Modeling : Develop and maintain data models for databases and data lakes. Design relational schemas and dimensional models for operational and analytical workloads. Optimize Redshift schemas with partitioning and appropriate keys.
  • Advanced Analytics Enablement : Work with Data Science and Analytics teams to enable AI and advanced analytics. Provide datasets and pipelines for machine learning models. Implement real-time streaming data handling (using Kinesis or Kafka if needed) and ensure data quality and freshness for AI use cases.
  • Efficiency and Scalability : Design scalable data handling processes. Optimize ETL jobs (monitoring and tuning Glue / Spark). Implement incremental data loading strategies and CI / CD for data pipelines.
  • Data Governance & Security : Embed data governance with cataloging, lineage tracking, and governance policies. Ensure data privacy and security : access controls, encryption, data retention. Coordinate with InfoSec for audits and support data masking or tokenization for sensitive information.
  • Collaboration and Leadership : Collaborate with technology leaders, product managers, business analysts, and engineering leads. Provide technical leadership to data engineers, set development standards, conduct design / code reviews, and lead architecture review sessions.
  • Innovation and Thought Leadership : Stay current with data architecture, big data, and AI trends. Evaluate new technologies and pilot proof-of-concepts for new ideas.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience : 10+ years (preferred 15+ years) in data architecture, data engineering, or related fields, with a track record of designing and implementing large-scale data solutions. Demonstrated experience leading data-centric projects from concept to production.
  • Cloud & Big Data Expertise : Hands-on experience with AWS data services (Glue, Lambda, Redshift, S3). Strong experience with Hadoop and Spark; able to optimize heavy data processing and troubleshoot performance issues.
  • Data Modeling & Warehousing : Strong data modeling and database design skills. Experience with enterprise data warehouses or data lakes, partitioning, indexing, and query optimization.
  • Programming & Scripting : Proficiency in Python (or Scala / Java) for ETL / ELT scripting, solid SQL skills. Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform / CloudFormation) and CI / CD for data infrastructure is a plus.
  • Analytics and AI Orientation : Knowledge of ML concepts and experience supporting data science teams. Experience with real-time streaming (Kinesis, Kafka) and exposure to AI / ML services (e.g., SageMaker or Bedrock) is a plus.
  • Leadership & Soft Skills : Excellent communication, cross-functional collaboration, mentoring, and establishing best practices. Adaptable in a fast-paced environment.
  • Education : Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field required. Master’s degree a plus.
  • Certifications : AWS Certified Solutions Architect or AWS Certified Data Analytics preferred; other big data or database certifications are a plus.
  • Alight requires all virtual interviews to be conducted on video.
