I. MSF INTERNATIONAL Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion and natural disasters. MSF offers assistance to people based only on need and irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation. MSF International is the legal entity that binds MSF’s 24 sections, 28 associations and 19 branch offices together. Registered in Switzerland, MSF International provides coordination, information and support to the MSF Movement, as well as implements international projects and initiatives as requested.
II. POSITION BACKGROUND MSF is in daily contact with the world's most vulnerable populations as part of its mission and is witness to the impact of climate change on these populations. This is why MSF has set itself the strong ambition to reduce its CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030 and to develop a more sustainable management of its operations.
In addition, MSF wants that its relationships with its suppliers and subcontractors create sustainable added value for the employees directly involved in the realization of services and products as well as for the surrounding communities whether that be through social, economic, or environmental means.
It is with this dual ambition that we have begun implementing a sustainable procurement approach over the past three years. In this framework, measuring the social and environmental performance of our supply chain becomes a priority for our organization.
To that effect, sustainable procurement in MSF is driven by a collaboration between the MSF Global Procurement Unit (GPU) and other projects undertaken by the International Office (IO) and the Operational Centers. A joint roadmap has been established to integrate the sustainability of MSF’s procurement practices. This approach relies on the deepening of the relationships between our procurement teams and our suppliers. To achieve transparency and visibility into our complex supply chain, MSF has set itself the ambitious goal of assessing the sustainability of its supplier base, through an external service provider (Ecovadis), but also through internally designed assessment techniques. Over the past year and a half, suppliers have been onboarded, procurement experts have been trained and assessing the sustainability of our critical suppliers has become part of our standard sourcing process. While further efforts need to be made to reach our objectives towards our supplier base and towards our own practices, there is a need now to work with the assessed parties to raise the overall sustainability of our supplier base.
