Job Title : Senior Legal Counsel Data Privacy

About the role :

You will be a subject matter expert providing data privacy advice and support across the Aptean group. Your role involves advising on legislation and practical application to our business operations, and guiding stakeholders at various levels of seniority. This position is vital for ensuring compliance with data privacy obligations across different jurisdictions, requiring agility and the ability to identify and escalate risks promptly. You should be a hands-on professional with strong ethics, capable of managing multiple priorities calmly and efficiently in a small team environment.

Day-to-day responsibilities :

  • Lead and advise on privacy initiatives such as data mapping, data retention, DPIAs, SCCs, international data transfer processes, privacy by design, and integration activities for new acquisitions, driving projects to completion.
  • Manage data subject rights requests and coordinate their resolution.
  • Implement and support privacy policies, procedures, and work instructions in collaboration with legal, IT, and security teams.
  • Analyze and improve current privacy infrastructure, assist with audits and risk assessments.
  • Escalate privacy risks and develop legal solutions.
  • Train employees on data privacy compliance, increasing awareness organization-wide.
  • Monitor legal developments in data privacy law and update programs and training accordingly.
  • Serve as the primary contact for staff, legal teams, and data protection authorities on privacy matters.
  • Assist with data incident management and security policy development.
  • Advise on marketing initiatives involving e-privacy and data sharing, review privacy notices, and negotiate privacy terms in contracts.
  • Collaborate with various business units to support their objectives and manage privacy initiatives across jurisdictions.
  • Liaise with regulatory authorities as needed.

Requirements :

  • Qualified lawyer with in-house experience, preferably in a software / IT environment.
  • 8-10 years of experience in data privacy initiatives and support.
  • Data Privacy certifications such as CIPP / E required; CIPP / US preferred.
  • Experience drafting privacy agreements, policies, notices, and managing data security incidents.
  • Strong knowledge of GDPR and other data privacy laws.
  • Ability to provide pragmatic legal advice and influence stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in the software industry and with information security teams.
  • Understanding of technical controls, PETs, and security standards like ISO 27001, NIST.
  • Combination of in-house and law firm experience preferred.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to manage high workload with minimal supervision.
