IRTA is currently seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Researcher with a PhD in Agronomy, Precision Agriculture, or a related field to join the Sustainable Field Crops Scientific Program. We are seeking a dedicated and innovative researcher to join our team focusing on arable crops such as cereals and legumes within the framework of the AGROLABS project.The focus of the research will be the development, validation, and implementation of tools, methods, and strategies that enable precision agriculture for variable rate application of fertilizers and crop protection products. This will involve utilizing new digital technologies, including IoT, remote and proximal sensing, computer vision, and AI, among others. The research will align with the main research lines of the Sustainable Field Crops Scientific Program. The appointed candidate will lead high-quality research to drive advancements in this area of knowledge.Head of the Program : Dr Marta da SilvaJob location : LleidaFull-time position : 37.5 h / weekTerms of appointment : permanent position or IRTA Consolida (tenure track) position subject to the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.Salary : to be resolved according to the qualifications and experience of the selected candidateEmployee Benefits : 22 vacation days, 3 days of family & work conciliation, 45h of personal days, Friday afternoon off, Compressed Summer schedule from 15 / 06 to 15 / 09, Conciliation schedule.Tasks and Responsabilities : Develop Precision Irrigation Strategies : Design and implement research projects aimed at optimizing water usage through precision irrigation techniques, ensuring efficient water use and minimizing waste.Optimize Fertilizer Application : Conduct studies to determine the precise nutrient requirements of arable crops and develop methods to reduce fertilizer (e.G. variable rate application of fertilizers) use while maintaining or improving crop yields.Minimize Pesticide Use : Research and develop integrated pest management (IPM) strategies in collaboration with other research programs at IRTA that reduce reliance on chemical pesticides by incorporating biological controls, crop rotation, and precision application techniques.Data Collection and Analysis : Utilize remote sensing, GIS, and other precision agriculture tools to collect and analyse data on soil health, crop growth, and input efficiency. Use this data to refine application processes and improve productivity.Field Trials and Demonstrations : Set up and manage field trials to test and validate precision agriculture technologies and practices. Demonstrate the benefits of reduced input usage and increased application efficiency to stakeholders.Collaboration and Knowledge Transfer : Work closely with agronomists, farmers, and industry partners to translate research findings into practical applications. Provide training and support to ensure the adoption of precision agriculture practices.Reporting and Dissemination : Prepare detailed reports and present research findings in scientific journals, at conferences, and to the public. Communicate the economic and environmental benefits of precision agriculture practices.Grant Writing and Funding : Contribute to the development of grant proposals and funding applications to support ongoing and future research projects focused on sustainable agriculture and input efficiency.Mentorship and Leadership : Provide guidance and mentorship to junior researchers and interns, fostering a collaborative and innovative research environment.Required qualifications and experience : Ph.D. in Agronomy, Crop Science, Precision Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field.Proven experience in conducting research on precision agriculture techniques, particularly related to water, fertilizer, and pesticide management in arable crops.Proficiency in using precision agriculture tools and technologies, including remote sensing, GIS, and variable rate technology (VRT). Experience with data analysis software and statistical tools.Deep understanding of agronomic practices, crop physiology, and soil science. Familiarity with integrated pest management (IPM) and sustainable agriculture practices.Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and manage field trials and research projects. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.Experience working with diverse stakeholders, including farmers, agronomists, and industry partners.
