The legal counsel, or general counsel, represents the organization in legal disputes. They advise executives and / or the Board of Directors on legal matters related to the organization's business activities (for example, government regulations, contracts, property, taxes, labor). They report directly to the Head of Compliance.
Key Accountabilities / Duties
- Draft and manage legal documents.
- Oversee all legal aspects of the business.
- Offer legal guidance and advice to management.
- Look for creative solutions and support on legal issues.
- Review and negotiate a diverse range of agreements.
- Assist on corporate processes.
Requirements
Education Requirements
A law degree from an accredited law school is required, with additional degrees (e.g., in accounting, finance, or business administration) valued. Admission to the Bar Association of the relevant state is also required.
Knowledge Requirements
Knowledge of legal, corporate, and administrative procedures, including relationships with registries, notaries, and auditors.Experience in drafting and reviewing commercial contracts, including international law aspects.Knowledge of the insurance sector is a plus.Preferred Work Experience
At least 5 years in a legal department of a regulated corporation, preferably in an insurance company.
