Context And Mission
The Computational Biology Group, led by ICREA Professor Alfonso Valencia, is looking for a Senior Research Engineer (RE2) to support data analysis across several research projects. These include the study of chromatin dynamics during B-cell differentiation, the prediction of drug synergies in cancer, and the mechanistic investigation of organoid development.
Located within the Life Sciences Department at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), the group operates in an international and multidisciplinary research environment encompassing diverse areas of computational biology, from genomics and bioinformatics to computational biochemistry and epidemiology. The Computational Biology Group ( ) is involved in a broad range of national and international initiatives focused on multilayer network modelling, epigenomics, and systems biology.
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. José Carbonell and will be part of a multidisciplinary and international team. The role involves applying advanced statistical methods, artificial intelligence, and computational simulations to address key innovations in precision medicine and cancer biology The position also offers the opportunity to engage in collaborative research with top-tier institutions such as the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC) and the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas (CNIO), within the framework of national and European projects.
Key Duties
Apply established data science and bioinformatics pipelines to analyse various types of molecular data.
Perform integration of multi-omics datasets (e.g., transcriptomics, epigenomics, proteomics) to support systems-level insights.
Explore and apply state-of-the-art AI and machine learning techniques for modelling complex biological phenomena.
Contribute to the design, preparation, and dissemination of research findings, including reports, presentations, and publications.
Proactive participation in internal meetings, collaborative discussions, and broader scientific exchanges within the group and with external partners.
Requirements
Education
A degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field.
Alternatively, a degree in Bioinformatics, Biomedical Sciences, or a related lifescience discipline.
Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
Demonstrated experience in data analysis and multi-omics data integration.
Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in data science and bioinformatics, particularly R and Python.
Familiarity with UNIX / Linux environments for computational workflows.
Ability to access, interpret, and critically evaluate scientific literature.
Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
Previous experience in life sciences research, particularly in genomics or systems biology.
Knowledge and hands-on experience with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning methodologies, including frameworks such as Keras, PyTorch or Tensorflow.
Previous experience working with single-cell sequencing data.
Fluency in English (spoken and written) is required.
Competences
Strong communication and presentation skills, both written and oral.
Ability to work autonomously while also being an effective team player.
